Benjamin Franklin's Toast

I have read this a couple of other places in the past and I just came across it again in The Journal, a Summit Ministries Publication. I thought you might enjoy the wit of Mr. Franklin the elder stateman at the founding of our Republic.

While Benjamin Franklin served as ambassador of the United States to France, he had occasion to be at a dinner in Versailles with foreign dignitaries. The minister of Great Britian proposed a toast to King George III likening him to the sun. The minister of France proposed a toast to King Louis XVI likening him to the moon. In response, Benjamin Franklin stood up and toasted:

"George Washington, Commander of the Armerican armies, who like Joshua of old, commanded the sun and the moon to stand still, and they obeyed him."
