"Jesus is my homeboy" I saw this on a young person this morning during my daily routine. This is outrageous! It is the result of a segment of "Christianity" embracing the pop culture of our day. I readily admit I do not know what a "homeboy" is but what ever it is I am equally certain that Jesus is not one. This is just another example of a Christianity whose message is coming to Christ means staying as you are, you just have a different "homeboy."
I would be the first one to proclaim that we come to Christ as we are but I would equally proclaim that once we come to Christ we do not stay as we were. When a person believes in Christ their heart and life is transformed.
2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
I am constantly appalled at the deterioration of the Christian message as it is increasingly influenced by the worldly culture. Whatever happened to a Christianity that changed the world? A Christianity that turned the world upside down? It is becoming increasingly fashionable to be a "worldly Christian." It may be fashionable but it is not worthy of the Saviour who bled and died to take away our sins.
The message of this t-shirt and many others like it and some no doubt worse is that you can be a Christian and not have your perspective, language, worldview, terminology, and preferences sanctified and purified. This is not a message that is in keeping with the Scripture.
To put it bluntly this t-shirt is an affront to everything that is holy and godly. It is blasphemous! I can only conclude that one of two things are true about someone who would wear such an article of clothing. 1. They do not know the Saviour. 2. They are in an environment that does not cultivate the exercise of discernment concerning right and wrong.
This is not a fitting expression for one whom the Scripture says is, ". . . holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;. . ."
Jesus is a lot of things!
He is the Saviour.
He is the risen Lord.
He is the ascended Christ.
He is God in flesh.
He is the living Word.
He is the living Water.
He is the Bread come down from heaven.
He is the Door.
He is the way, the truth, and the life.
He is the prophet like unto Moses.
He is the creator of heaven and Earth.
He is the good Shepherd.
He is the head of the church.
He is the Son of God.
He is the great I Am.
He is God of very God.
He is not any one's "homeboy" and it is sacrilegious to proclaim him as such. May God deliver us from a worldly Christianity that calls no one to repentance!
